Shri Shantadurga Temple at Kavlem in Ponda taluka is one of the most important Hindu temples in Goa. It is dedicated to Shantadurga, a form of the goddess Durga regarded as a peacemaker between Shiva and Vishnu. The deity was originally at Quelossim in Salcete and was moved to Kavlem in the 16th century during Portuguese rule. The present temple was built in the 18th century with the support of a minister of the Maratha ruler Shahu. Its architecture combines Indian and European elements, with a pyramidal roof, a dome, Roman-style arches and large chandeliers in the hall. A tall lamp tower stands in front of the temple, and a large tank lies nearby. The temple hosts major festivals, including a grand annual zatra. It is worth the trip for its elegant architecture and religious importance.
