Shri Nagesh Temple
Bandora, India

Shri Nagesh Temple at Bandora in Ponda taluka is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Nagesh. Unlike many Ponda temples, the deity was not moved here from the coast, and the site has an older history, with an inscription dating to the early 15th century. The present structure was rebuilt in the 18th century. The temple is known for its peaceful setting surrounded by hills and a large tank fringed with palm trees. Its wooden frieze inside depicts scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, which are among the finest temple carvings in Goa. A lamp tower stands in the courtyard. The temple is quieter than Mangueshi and Shantadurga, which makes it pleasant to visit. It is worth the trip for its setting and its old carved woodwork.
