Palacio do Deao is a restored 18th-century mansion in Quepem, South Goa. It was built in 1787 by José Paulo de Almeida, a Portuguese nobleman and dean of the church who founded the town of Quepem. The house reflects a mix of Portuguese and Hindu architectural styles, with high ceilings, carved woodwork and a gracious veranda. It sits on the bank of the Kushavati River and is surrounded by landscaped gardens. After years of decline, the house was carefully restored by the Vasco da Gama family, who now welcome visitors. Guided tours explain the house's history and its restoration. Visitors can book a traditional Indo-Portuguese meal in advance. It is worth the trip for a beautifully preserved house with a personal story.
