The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is the most famous landmark in Panaji, standing on a hillside above the main square. A chapel was first built here in 1541, and the present church dates from 1619, when it was rebuilt on a larger scale. It once served as a landmark for sailors arriving from Lisbon, who would visit to give thanks for a safe voyage. Its brilliant white Portuguese Baroque facade is approached by a grand zigzag staircase added in the 19th century. The church's large bell came from the ruined Church of St Augustine in Old Goa. Inside, the main altar is dedicated to Our Lady, with side altars to other saints. The feast of the Immaculate Conception on 8 December is celebrated with a large fair. It is worth the trip as the visual symbol of Panaji and a classic photograph of Goa.
