Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary covers about 208 square kilometres of forest in Sattari taluka, in the northeastern corner of Goa. It was declared a sanctuary in 1999 and lies along the Western Ghats, which are recognised as a global biodiversity hotspot. The sanctuary takes its name from the Mhadei River, also known as the Mandovi, which flows through it. Its forests are home to gaur, sambar, sloth bear and leopards, and tigers have been recorded. It also hosts a rich variety of birds, reptiles and amphibians, including many endemic species. Sonsogod, the highest peak in Goa, lies within the sanctuary. The Vazra Sakla waterfalls are among its scenic highlights. It is worth the trip for nature lovers seeking Goa's wildest forest landscape.
