Kala Academy is Goa's leading centre for the performing and visual arts, located on the Mandovi riverfront in Campal, Panaji. The academy was founded by the Goa government in 1970 to promote music, dance, drama and fine arts. Its building was designed by the celebrated Indian architect Charles Correa and is regarded as a landmark of modern Indian architecture. The complex includes a large indoor auditorium, an open-air amphitheatre, art galleries and practice spaces. It hosts concerts, plays in Konkani, Marathi and English, dance performances and art exhibitions throughout the year. The academy also runs schools of music, dance, drama and art. During the International Film Festival of India, it serves as one of the event venues in Panaji. It is worth the trip for both its architecture and its cultural programme.
