The Holy Spirit Church in Margao is one of the finest examples of Baroque church architecture in Goa. A church was first founded here in 1565, and after earlier buildings were destroyed in raids, the present church was built in 1675. Its tall white facade, flanked by towers, overlooks the large square known as the Largo de Igreja. The square is lined with old Indo-Portuguese houses and has a tall carved cross at its centre. Inside, the church features a richly gilded altar and elaborate decoration. The church is the centre of Margao's Catholic life and hosts major festivals. It is a short walk from Margao's markets and municipal garden. It is worth the trip for its architecture and the heritage square around it.
