Goa State Museum
Panaji, India

The Goa State Museum in Patto, Panaji, is the main museum of the state government and covers the region's history, art and culture. It was established in 1977 and moved to its current purpose-built home in the 1990s. Its galleries hold stone sculptures from Goa's temples, including works from the Kadamba period, along with hero stones and inscriptions. Other sections cover Christian art, bronzes, coins, wood carving, furniture and contemporary art. A notable exhibit is a massive carved table and chairs said to have been used by the Goa Inquisition. There are also displays on the freedom struggle and on Goan folk traditions. Entry is free or nominal, and the museum is seldom crowded. It is worth the trip for an overview of Goa beyond its beaches and churches.
