The Chapel of St Catherine in Old Goa marks the spot where Afonso de Albuquerque entered the city after capturing it on St Catherine's Day, 25 November 1510. He built a small chapel here in thanksgiving, which makes this one of the earliest Christian sites in Goa. When the diocese of Goa was created in 1534, the chapel served as the first cathedral. The present building was rebuilt in the mid-16th century and is a simple structure with two towers flanking its facade. A stone inside records its history and the events of 1510. The chapel sits near Se Cathedral and the Church of St Francis of Assisi and is part of the UNESCO-listed Churches and Convents of Goa. It is small and quick to visit. It is worth seeing for its foundational role in Goa's Christian history.
