Chandreshwar Bhutnath Temple sits atop Chandranath Hill near Paroda in Quepem taluka, about 350 metres above sea level. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Chandreshwar, the lord of the moon, and is one of the oldest temple sites in Goa. The hill was once linked to the ancient capital of Chandrapur, ruled by the Bhoja kings. The temple's sanctum is built so that moonlight falls on the linga on full moon nights, and the stone is said to ooze water at such times. A shrine to Bhutnath, a guardian deity, stands nearby. The climb to the top rewards visitors with sweeping views over the green countryside of South Goa. The site is peaceful and rarely crowded. It is worth the trip for its legend, history and hilltop panorama.
