Brahma Temple Brahma Karmali
Valpoi, India

The Brahma Temple at Brahma Karmali in Sattari taluka is one of the very few temples in India dedicated to Lord Brahma, the creator god. Its main idol is a black stone image believed to date from the 12th century, during the Kadamba period. The idol originally stood in the village of Carambolim near Old Goa and was moved to this remote forest village to protect it during Portuguese rule. The village name Brahma Karmali reflects this connection with Carambolim. The idol is admired for its fine carving, showing Brahma with his attendants. The temple itself is modest and stands in a quiet rural setting. It sees relatively few tourists. It is worth the trip for its rare dedication and its historic idol.
