Big Spring

Big Spring near Van Buren is one of the largest springs in the United States, discharging hundreds of millions of gallons of water a day at peak flow. The spring emerges dramatically from the base of a bluff, its powerful blue-green outflow rushing into the Current River nearby. It is part of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, the first national park area established to protect a river system. The spring's immense volume makes it a striking natural spectacle, especially after heavy rains. A short walk from the parking area leads to viewpoints beside the boil where the water surges up from underground. The surrounding area, developed in part by Depression-era work crews, includes rustic stone structures and a campground. Visitors come to admire the spring, picnic, and access the river for floating and fishing. Interpretive signs explain the karst geology that feeds the spring. The forested setting adds to the sense of natural grandeur. It is among the most impressive springs in the country. Its scale genuinely surprises first-time visitors.
