The original Bass Pro Shops store in Springfield is the flagship of the outdoor retail empire and an attraction in its own right. The company was founded by John L. Morris in 1972, and the Springfield store grew into a sprawling destination that draws millions of visitors a year. Far more than a shop, it features large aquariums, waterfalls, wildlife displays, and museum-like exhibits throughout the retail space. Mounted animals, boats, and themed departments create an immersive outdoor-adventure atmosphere. A restaurant and other amenities encourage visitors to linger. The store is directly connected to the Wonders of Wildlife museum and aquarium, forming a combined complex. Its scale and elaborate decor made it a model for the company's later stores nationwide. Anglers, hunters, and casual tourists all find something to see. The store helped establish Springfield's identity as an outdoor-recreation hub. It remains one of the most visited attractions in the region.
