The Arvalem Caves, also known as the Pandava Caves, are a group of rock-cut caves near Sanquelim in Bicholim taluka. They are carved into laterite and are generally dated to around the 6th or 7th century. Local legend holds that the Pandavas of the Mahabharata stayed here during their exile, which gives the caves their popular name. Historians have debated whether the caves were Buddhist or Hindu in origin. Several chambers hold Shiva lingas, one of which bears an early inscription. The caves are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and are set within a landscaped garden. The Arvalem Waterfall and the Rudreshwar Temple are a short walk away. It is worth the trip as part of a combined visit to the Arvalem area.
