American Jazz Museum

The American Jazz Museum in the 18th and Vine district celebrates Kansas City's central role in the history of jazz. It opened in 1997 in a neighborhood that was one of the great incubators of the music in the 1920s and 1930s. Kansas City jazz, with its blues-inflected, swinging style, produced giants such as Charlie Parker and Count Basie, both honored in the museum's exhibits. Interactive displays let visitors explore rhythm, improvisation, and the recordings that defined the era. The museum shares a complex with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, and both anchor the historic district's revival. The adjacent Blue Room functions as a working jazz club, offering live performances that keep the tradition alive. The Gem Theater across the street hosts concerts and events. Exhibits combine artifacts, listening stations, and multimedia to immerse visitors in the sound. The museum situates Kansas City alongside New Orleans, Chicago, and New York in the jazz story.
