Alley Spring and Mill

Alley Spring and its historic mill near Eminence form one of the most iconic scenes in the Missouri Ozarks. The spring is one of the largest in the state, discharging millions of gallons of clear blue-green water each day from beneath a bluff. Beside it stands the Alley Mill, a bright red roller mill built in 1894 to grind grain for local farmers. The mill's vivid color reflected in the spring pool makes it one of the most photographed buildings in Missouri. The site is part of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, which protects the spring-fed Current and Jacks Fork rivers. Visitors can tour the preserved mill, walk trails around the spring, and learn about the community that once centered on the operation. The deep spring pool holds a remarkable turquoise hue. Interpretive exhibits explain the milling process and rural Ozark life. The surrounding area offers camping, floating, and hiking. Its blend of natural spectacle and rural heritage makes it a signature Ozark destination. The scene is especially striking in autumn.
